beckons - November 9
The North Eastern state of Assam is witnessing fresh boost in tourist
arrival to the state. After a lull of several years, mainly due
to insurgency problems in the state, the tourist traffic is back
into the state giving fresh hope to local people.
State Tourism department is planning new amenities in popular tourist
spots to support tourist arrivals. At the same time, possibility
of developing newer tourist destinations are also being considered.
The state is most famous for its natural heritage. Assam has five
National Parks in the State and 18
wildlife sanctuaries and two bird sanctuaries. It has adequate provisions
for accommodating substantial number of tourists. There are provisions
for jeep and elephant safaris, trekking in jungles and bird watching
among other activities to meet the varying interests of the tourists.
Eco-tourism is also expected to take up increasingly important role
in the coming days. Five sites has been identified in the state
where eco-tourism will be promoted with the help of the North East
Council (NEC). The places are Dibrugarh, Naogaon, Kaziranga, Dhubri
and Bongaigaon. The efforts of various Government and private agencies
has started bearing fruit as is evident from increasing number of
tourists in the State. But the most significant development in this
respect is the gesture towards involving the private operators in
the scheme of things. The ATDC and Assam
Tourism, are looking into developing meaningful partnerships with
private sector for developing
state's tourist amenities like accommodation, transport, etc.
The effort to promote other sanctuaries rich in invaluable bio diversity
and endangered species has
resulted in the attention being focused to Pabitora Wildlife Sanctuary,
Bhalukpong Sanctuary among others. Kaziranga and Manas National
parks are already in world heritage site and have enjoyed their
share of publicity and attention. Though each and every National
park and wild life sanctuary of the State has certain uniqueness
in itself, in general they abound in some of the rarest species
of flora and fauna. The other notable effort in this direction is
the effort to popularize the festivals like Rangoli Utsav. Bairabi
VC has made it known that for the sake of the people living in the
area, the Mizoram government should act expeditiously to smooth
out the misunderstanding that has arisen between Mizoram residents
and Assam residents.
